Mormonism vs Scientology: Control Methods and Beliefs

I have been asked many times whether Mormonism is a destructive cult. This is my second talk with former Mormon Jonathan Streeter and we go over control methods, beliefs and authoritarian practices within both Scientology and the LDS Church and how they compare and contrast. I think anyone who is curious about this will find this interesting.

  1. Thanks to both of you for taking the time to re-do this! Your discussions have been very interesting and informative.

  2. So interesting – such interesting comparisons. Thanks to both Chris & Jonathan for doing this. Do you realize you are educating future generations?? My grandchildren will be taught what to look for from organized religions after their minds.

    1. Bonnie: Are you the same Bonnie Holman who has son’s with last name of Kohler? If so, are you “out” of the JW’s?

  3. Travolta ensured that his experience has been nothing but beautiful, and promised it is for others, too. Travolta and other believing Scientologists never publicly talk about Lord Xenu or the other strange beliefs about Scientology. They merely say that it has been good for them.

  4. Wow. I am a former Mormon, and I’ve always had a difficult time explaining to friends and family why I don’t agree with the church. I never have a good answer, because until now I haven’t had the words or understanding to explain the issues I have with the church. One of my biggest is the illusion of choice Jonathan touched on. I’ve also never really allowed myself to consider that I grew up in a cult. The motivation of ‘love’ is insidious and makes it really difficult to parse out when that ‘love’ is masking abusive behaviors.

I’m so so glad I found this (thank you Oh No! Ross and Carrie!) and look forward to listening to more of your content!

  5. Kaylee – by any chance were you married in the Mormon Church? In the sealing ceremony? I saw a documentary once where a young couple were getting married, and the groom’s family were not allowed to attend the ceremony because they are not Mormon. Once a Morman temple is blessed no one may enter except another Morman (not unlike only Muslims being allowed Mecca in Saudia Arabia). His mother was incredibly hurt. No idea if the couple made it. They were quite young.
