Today I want to talk to you about the Church of Scientology’s legal and covert operations division, the Office of Special Affairs. This is the part of the Church tasked with dealing with critics and those who speak out publicly against Scientology.
News came out recently that they have been working overtime in an effort to fulfill L. Ron Hubbard’s orders to rain fire and brimstone down on critics and ruin them utterly.
Hubbard made it clear in numerous places that he did not take criticism well, going all the way back to his days in the university. He tells many stories in his lectures of times when his professors or fellow writers or editors were critical of his work and how he blasted them with his fiery temper and quick wit, making sure they would never come at him again.
Once Scientology actually got going in the 1950s, Hubbard wrote policies to ensure that anyone who criticized the Church would be very sorry for doing so. In March of 1955, he wrote in Ability Magazine number one:
“The DEFENSE of anything is untenable. The only way to defend anything is to ATTACK, and if you ever forget that then you will lose every battle you are ever engaged in, whether it is in terms of personal conversation, public debate or court of law.”
And make no mistake. when it comes to critics, Scientology does think that they are in a war. Now mind you, this is a delusional viewpoint. These are people who truly believe that free speech and the free expression of opinion are dangerous and need to be stopped.
They carry on Hubbard’s tradition of being completely unable to accept that not everyone is going to agree with them. Moreover, when someone actively disagrees publicly, they feel they have to take it upon themselves to destroy that person, regardless of whatever human rights or constitutional guarantees that person has.
If you think I’m being extreme, listen to this from Hubbard, also from that 1955 issue:
“The law can be used very easily to harass, and enough harassment on somebody who is simply on the thin edge anyway…will generally be sufficient to cause his professional decease. If possible, of course, ruin him utterly.”
There is currently an anti-harassment lawsuit ongoing in the state of Texas, where the current leader of Scientology, David Miscavige, and his OSA minions are being called on the carpet because of their overt harassment techniques.
Because of this, OSA cannot afford to be as upfront and open about their attacks. But that doesn’t mean that they’ve actually learned any lessons from this or turned over a new leaf. On the contrary, they have no choice but to continue to attack because that’s what Hubbard and Miscavige demand they do. So they are now resorting to more shady and underhanded tactics.
I have reports of some very interesting covert activities which OSA has been engaged in lately, such as executing Denial of Service Attacks on critic websites, spamming critics with phony emails designed to distract or get them in legal trouble, and much worse.
Starting at the end of May 2014, Jeffrey Augustine and Karen Delacarriere’s YouTube channels have been subjected to a relatively new form of cyber terrorism, one which specifically tries to take advantage of a YouTube term of use policy so as to get specific videos deleted.
It works like this: if you click on a YouTube video and watch it for about 20 seconds, that will count as one “view” on the video. So the simplicity of this kind of attack is to hit play on a YouTube video every 20 seconds, over and over and over again. And if you write a computer program to do this or pay a large group of people to do it, then you can artifically drive up the number of views significantly in a very short time.
This is known as a blackhat internet practice because it’s the kind of thing bad people or stupid companies do in order to inflate the popularity of their YouTube videos. So YouTube has now set up means of identifying this kind of activity and deletes the offending videos. Where this is done to someone who is purposefully inflating their video views, it’s a correct move to discipline them.
But what about when you are a good guy, like a Scientology critic expressing your First Amendment free speech rights, and OSA can’t seem to get at you any other way? What do they do? Attack you by artifically inflating your video views, thereby trying to get YouTube to delete the videos for them. It’s a form of cyber-bullying and harassment, pure and simple.
YouTube keeps a lot of analytics information on each video. So in the case Karen’s Surviving Scientology channel, we know that these inflated views are coming from remote regions such as India, Pakistan and similar countries. Since there is only one group in the world who has a vested interest in seeing that Karen’s videos come down, it’s not hard to narrow the list of suspects down as to who would be behind this attack, and it’s not anyone in India or Pakistan.
Eight of Karen’s videos were targeted, apparently at random since the videos do not all have any common theme or subject. Except, of course, to point out that Scientology is a corrupt and evil organization which is bent on only one thing: soaking as much money out of its parishioners as it can before it implodes.
Unable to compete in the arena of ideas and rational discourse, OSA has no choice but to attack using the most insidious and underhanded methods they have available to them. Jeffrey Augustine this morning issued an open challenge to the Church to debate any church representative at any place and time. I echo that challenge. I will be more than happy to meet anywhere and debate any Scientologist on the merits of the Church and its policies.
And just to be crystal clear, none of this activity is going to stop any of us critics from continuing to speak out. If anything, it just reinforces our reasons for doing this in the first place.
Former OSA staffers have come out as whisteblowers and told some of the most amazing stories as to how low they will go to find out information, stalk and harass church critics and engage in all sorts of other activities unbecoming any group which calls itself a church. I’ve included links at the end of this video to some of these whistleblowers who have given a lot more information about their dirty tricks.
Anyone with any common sense would realize that if you were on the side of truth and justice, you would not have to engage in these kind of terrorist-like covert ops in order to accomplish your ends. But that’s exactly where OSA seems to get it wrong time and time again. Maybe that’s because they really aren’t on the side of truth and justice. Maybe OSA draws the types of individuals to it who prefer to work under the cover of dark, who can’t stand it when the light of truth is shone on them.
Now I have a request of you, the person who is watching this right now. Let’s get busy exposing these activities. Please take the time to reach out to YouTube and let them know that you are aware of this kind of cyberattack, and demand that they do something for those who are being victimized. Let them know that their policy of automatic deletion of any offending videos has an unintended consequence of hurting the good guys too, and that they need to do something more effective to protect the innocent as well as punish the guilty.
Send an email to this address on the screen, as YouTube does not have any direct means of contact other than email. Any phone calls are a waste of your time. Just send them an email, explain the situation and demand they solve it.
This is important. Your voice does count and if enough people act on this, YouTube will listen.
The email address is: security@youtube.com
Thank you for watching.
Chris, you might include the contact address for YouTube in your transcription.
Thanks, MK.
Goood point. I added it at the end.
Even though you’ve probably already done it, I’ve emailed a link to Tony about your YouTube video.
Thank you for explaining this. You are doing good work.
Excellent video! Your contributions regarding the cult of Scientology are very valuable. Thank you for your efforts!
I have sent a message to youtube and received their automated reply. Only the channel owner can actually do something about their channel being attacked. Youtube wards off being swamped by emails.
Thanks Wolfgang. I still recommend anyone who cares about this to send the emails anyway. It won’t hurt anything to keep hitting YouTube up on this matter.
Thanks. I read the essay and it is excellent. Please keep it up. I would love to see and hear you more on mainstream media. Your commentaries are factual and to the point. Your delivery is calm and direct.
I would like to mention that the office of special affairs are involved not only in special affairs, but in affairs that really aren’t that special at all. Maybe they are strapped, with membership down and criticism up. Maybe they can’t get the quality of people they once did.
The journalists that they used to go after with vengeance are writing whatever they want and Scientology doesn’t seem to be able to do a lot about it. A day doesn’t go by without the publication of a negative article. I would love to see a second Time Magazine cover story.
I am the smallest player in all this but for a while there I was having multiple down votes beside my posts on the Tony Ortega site. About a month ago I received a very harsh and personal reply to something I had written there six months earlier. I checked out the responder on Disqus and it turned out that he or she was doing that to many of the critics. I have no way of knowing if it was OSA or a concerned Scientologist going after a suppressive. Either way, knocking me down is not going to help them clear the planet.
You nailed it. There are fewer and fewer of these OSA guy sand they are having to hire people to do their dirty work for them now more than ever. They are fighting a losing battle and factually, are not really the “big threat” that they once were at all. OSA, like the Church of Scientology as a whole, are gasping their last breaths.
Awesome Chris!
I appreciate you getting into the trenches as you are and exposing the ugliest sides of this cult. It is inspiring.
Science is proving that the constant attacking of critics is not the best way to communicate — on the contrary. And these attacks by the cult are vicious, for example “Operation Snow White” as you have beautifully described in past videos. They are out to “destroy” perceived enemies as much as possible. Perhaps even murder??? Isn’t that what “utterly destroy” means?
Thanks for the Hubbard quotes at the beginning. Chilling! It just goes to show not only how callous and cruel the man was but also how wrong he was about the best way to deal with critics. The tactic of only attacking is has been proven to be”stupid” and will ultimately fail. It might have “worked” temporarily in the past because of the closed information channels, but now with the internet, that has changed and the stupidity of the tactic will have the predicted result.
One of the thing that infuriates me with Co$ (as with all cults) is how the members (who are good people, as you clearly prove, Chris) believe that one person, in this case Hubbard, is a god, and thus as a member all you have to do is study Hubbard and not use your own brain and curiosity to figure things out. You give-up your own brain and try to supplant it with Hubbard’s. That one reason why videos like this that show Hubbard as an idiot are so powerful.
I will leave it to the guys like Chris who know what they are talking about to give you advise (I just received 3 auditing sessions — then when I called and demanded that I be taken off the mailing list, shortly thereafter I had all the windows on my car smashed while it was parked in my driveway), I will just try to lend some support. Just know that you are not alone and that there are tons of resources out there. This site, http://tonyortega.org/ http://www.mikerindersblog.org/ and many others.
I am sorry you have had to leave behind your friends. I agree that the vast majority of people in cults are good people. In this case we have one horrible person at the top — Miscavage. And the cult is currently designed only to keep the money flowing to the top. It obviously doesn’t care about people, or it wouldn’t treat them so poorly.
I am glad you got out and welcome to a kinder and gentler world.
