Critical Thoughts PSA #1 – Facts vs Beliefs

By request, I am creating a series of Public Service Announcements (PSAs) about important concepts in critical thinking. These will all be short, about a minute or so, and will cover one topic each. This first one is about facts and beliefs.

Here is the transcript for this:

A fact is a piece of information that is true regardless of how you feel or what you think about it. A fact can be demonstrated in the real world through our perceptions and other kinds of evidence. Facts don’t just exist in our heads.

A belief is an idea someone has about how things are or what they think is true. Beliefs exist 100% in our heads.

The main difference between facts and beliefs is that you can change your mind about a belief and whoila, it’s changed. You can change your mind about a fact and guess what? Nothing’s changed.

Beliefs and facts are not the same. They are not equal in logical value.

You might feel your beliefs or opinions are as important to you as facts are but that doesn’t mean anyone else is going to, nor should they because your beliefs are YOUR beliefs, not anyone else’s.

Facts, on the other hand, should matter to everyone because they are real and they can affect anyone’s life.

Facts are what we use to build knowledge. The only forward progress Mankind has made has been on the back of facts.

And now you know.

    On the path to wisdom…
First there is the scientific method of comparison,
then there is the Scientology method of One Source* fits all, discarding comparisons altogether.
Lastly, there is the next step you take.

*one pretty much needs to have been a Scientologist to fully understand what One Source in this case really means.
Let me tell you this, if you question the Source while you are inside the bubble…
there will be hell to pay. One Source, after all, means every effort must be made to keep all the other sources squashed. And that, my friends, is how this church came to be so very secretive and nasty. But, come on, they were out to give you a snow job in the first place. Give us your money. All of it. More more more…
Tell your kids, your sons and daughters, please:
The best way to find out about Scientology is from the outside.

  2. This is a very good start for this series, Chris. It is a good format, short and crystallized packaging. Very easy to assimilate. In general, I want to commend you on the good work that you are doing. It is a valuable service.
